Lenovo manufactures a lot of notebooks, but the supremely thin ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Lenovo’s notebook/tablet hybrid, the IdeaPad Yoga 11S have achieved near-icon status. The IdeaPad Flex 14 takes design cues from both, resulting in a relatively slim, modestly priced 14-inch laptop.
The Flex 14’s display pivots 300 degrees so that you can operate it in tent mode or lay it keyboard-down on your desk to present it to someone sitting across from you. Unlike the Yoga, however, the Flex 14’s lid doesn’t flip all the way back to operate as a tablet. The Flex 14 echoes the X1 Carbon’s tapered form factor, but where that Ultrabook measures just 0.7 inches high at its thinnest edge, the Flex 14 is 0.85 inches. But then, the Flex 14 costs nearly $500 less.
The Flex 14’s Notebook Worldbench score of 278 is about what we expected for a notebook with these specs, but it’s slightly below what the comparably equipped Dell XPS 12 achieved (both machines use Intel’s Intel Core i5-4200U, but the Dell we tested had only 4GB of DDR3/1600 to the Lenovo’s 8). The Flex 14 delivered exceptionally good battery life of 7 hours and 38 minutes. And since it has a removable battery, you can carry a spare with you (provided you don't mind the additional weight) and double your productivity time.
Our review unit had a rather small SSD—just 128GB—so you’ll need to be picky about choosing the apps and media library additions you keep on hand. Given the limited space on the SSD, I wish Lenovo had been more careful with its pre-installed software choices. I particularly resented having a trial version of the PDF-creation app Nitro Pro as the only available program for opening the on-board user guide. Yes, the trial is free, but you get annoying nag windows urging you to buy, and after 30 days you’ll need to install Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader just to open the manual.

Samsung has yet to make an official announcement about the followup to its Galaxy S Duos. But, if the company's online store in India is any indication, it won't be too long before the second-gen dual-SIM-toting handset becomes available. According to the product page, Samsung's Galaxy S Duos 2 features a 4-inch, 800 x 480 screen, a "fast and powerful" 1.2GHz processor with 768MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB) and a 1,500mAh battery. The listing also notes that the Duos 2 -- said to be running Android 4.2 -- will be sold for 10,999 Indian rupees, which comes out to a little over 175 bucks in the US.

PHollisPhotos asked the Photo Editing forum how to give a sports photo a certain look, like an illustration with a black-and-white background.
You can do this with most good photo editors, although the exact look will depend on the filters and effects available, and your own choices. The instructions below are for two consumer-oriented editors--Photoshop Elements (PE), which is my personal favorite, and Photo Pos Pro (Pos), which is free.
But be careful if you install either of these. If you don't pay attention, both may try to install additional programs you may not want.

Nokia has started shipping two new low-end touch-screen phones running its own Asha software platform. It hopes they will allow it to compete more effectively with cheap Android-based products.
The Asha 503 is available in countries such as France, Italy, the UK and Portugal. Other countries are expected to follow in the coming weeks. Nokia will announce more specific dates later locally, it said. The main markets for the Asha 502 will be India, the Middle East and Africa.
The Asha 503 3G phone is the new flagship model of the family and will cost US$99 before taxes and subsidies. It has a 5-megapixel camera and a 3-inch screen protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2.
The dual-SIM Asha 502 has the same screen size and camera resolution as the 503, but no 3G, which helps make it $10 cheaper.

Toshiba has offered to buy the assets of OCZ Technology, a solid-state drive manufacturer on the verge of bankruptcy.
The deal would see Toshiba acquire most of the San Jose, California-based company as part of a deal with the local bankruptcy court. Toshiba will only acquire OCZ if it can maintain the value of its business and keep its employees.
OCZ has had problems acquiring flash memory chips for its drives and that has been affecting business.
Revenue in its most recent quarter was $33.5 million, down from $88.6 million in the same period a year earlier. But despite the sharply lower revenue, its losses fell from $26.1 million from $33.2 million a year earlier.

With Windows 7 as its operating system, Dell’s Latitude E6540 feels like a throwback. Whether that’s a good thing depends on what you’re looking for in a business-class laptop. If you want a comfortable, expandable machine to take the place of a desktop, this might be just what the IT department ordered. But you’ll have to contend with a dull, dated design and a high price tag.
I’d also recommend a little weight training if you intend to travel with this beast. The E6540 is a big system, measuring a full 1.3 inches thick and rockin’ the scale at 6.7 pounds. That leaves room to accommodate a 15.6-inch screen, a full-size numeric keypad, and a DVD+RW drive, but it doesn’t make for a very travel-friendly laptop. Indeed, an extended battery protrudes a full inch from the rear.
The Latitude E6540 has a decidedly old-fashioned keyboard. It’s spacious and comfortable, offering more travel than most modern island-style keyboards. That’s great for old-school typists like me, but may be a turnoff for younger users who are more accustomed to the newer designs. Although Dell provides both a keyboard-embedded pointing stick and a touchpad, the latter is small and doesn’t support any gestures other than two-finger scrolling (which it handles very smoothly).
Dell outfitted this machine with an Intel Core i7-4800MQ processor, 8GB of DDR3/1600 RAM, and a discrete AMD Radeon 8790M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM. To preserve battery power, the system will automatically turn off the discrete GPU when it’s not needed. So if you do end up traveling with the machine (remember, lift with your knees!), you’ll appreciate its above-average battery life (for a desktop replacement, at least) of 5 hours, 21 minutes.

Beware, Pocket and Instapaper: the folks at Facebook HQ are testing a feature that encroaches upon your "save-for-later" territory. This new function currently appears for some mobile users as an iBook bookmark-esque button next to status updates with links, although it actually saves the content of the link itself. You can access every saved link via a new menu (with a telltale name) under the Apps section. Before you get too excited for the feature, know that this is the second time Facebook's given it a spin -- the first iteration tested last year, however, archived status updates instead. If the save-for-later function does mak e it to everyone's accounts, though, we wouldn't be surprised if Facebook addicts remain even more glued to their screens.
