How to Add RAM to Your Laptop

Add RAM to Your Laptop

One of the best ways to perk up the performance of an older laptop is by increasing its memory. Most of the time, the process of adding RAM is little harder than changing a light bulb. But not every laptop is easy to upgrade, and some modern thin-and-light units can't be upgraded at all—you have to buy the laptop with as much memory as you expect to need for its lifetime. Here's a primer to upgrading your laptop with additional RAM.

Can You Upgrade?

The first thing to do when you're considering a memory upgrade is to verify that your laptop supports it. Then you need to determine how much memory you can add. Typically your BIOS and motherboard constrain the amount of RAM that you can add to your laptop. Every model is different, so consult your user's guide, search the Web, and read up on your laptop's specs at the vendor's website to figure out whether you can safely increase the amount of memory on your machine. While you're doing this research, identify the steps involved in opening your laptop case and swapping out the memory modules safely.

Next, you need to investigate how your currently installed memory is configured across the slots. For example, your laptop may have only two memory slots, both containing 256MB modules to achieve your system's current 512MB capacity. To get to 1GB, you would have to buy two 512MB modules. Alternatively, you might have a single 512MB module and an empty memeory slot, in which case you would need to add a second 512MB module to reach 1GB.

Last but not least, you need to know the type of memory that your laptop uses—PC133, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, or whatever—and its speed. Your laptop's documentation should contain this info, but you can also find it on the startup screen. If you don't see it, try pressing the Pause, Break, or Tab key while your system is booting, to freeze the boot or show the boot info. You can also find the memory type in the BIOS. Most often, you must press Delete, F2, or another function key early in the boot process in order to enter the BIOS.

New agreement lets Facebook and Zynga play the field, still shack up

New agreement lets Facebook and Zynga play the field, still shack up

It wasn't so long ago that Facebook and Zynga were making beautiful music (and money) together, but it seems that each is now looking for a bit of fresh air in the relationship, according to Reuters. A new agreement will give Zynga more freedom to offer games on its own website, while also allowing Facebook to develop its own -- though for now, the social network said it "was not in the business of building games and we have no plans to do so." For its part, Zynga now has the option of opting out of Facebook's payment mechanism and display ads, according to a recent filing by the Farmville maker. Both companies have seen their share of foibles, lately, but Facebook would perhaps be wise to not let its main dance partner too far out of sight -- Zynga still kicks in more than 15 percent of the now-public company's revenue.

UK Tweeters Face Libel Threats Over False Rumors

As many as 10,000 Twitter users in the United Kingdom face the threat of legal action because of their tweets regarding recent sexual abuse allegations. The tweeters could be in trouble because of comments -- either posted to Twitter or forwarded to other people -- in which they refer to a BBC report that incorrectly linked a former Conservative Party official to sexual abuse of a child.

5 Features iTunes 11 Still Needs

iTunes 11 is the best thing to happen to Apple's media hub in a long time. But while the cosmetic changes are nice, there are still plenty of underlying problems with iTunes that need to be addressed. At its core, iTunes is still just a shopping mall with a snazzy jukebox attached. But it could be so much more. More »

Apple Vets Carriers For 4G Performance Before Allowing iPhone 5 To Be Sold As An LTE Device

LTE-iphone-5Apple wants to ensure that customer experience with its iPhone 5 lives up to what the company is promising, and it will take strong measures to do so, including telling carriers when they can and can't make the phone's LTE capabilities available to subscribers. Generally speaking, carriers test to ensure devices meet their own network standards, but Apple seems to be in a strong enough position to be able to reverse that relationship.

Faster Forward: Cablevision-Fox slapfest drags on

When I wrote last Sunday's column about the dispute between Fox and Cablevision over what the New York cable-TV service should pay the network to carry its channels, I worried that the piece would be overtaken by a Saturday-morning settlement.

Survey: Google Play gains on Apple App Store

When it comes to which mobile application store to support, developers can factor in that Apple's App Store has the edge in volume, but Google Play -- the combined Android and HTML5 app store -- is on a growth spurt. Revenues from apps sold in the Google Play grew 17.9 percent in October compared to the previous month, while iOS App store sales shrink 0.7 percent in the same period. Compared to a year earlier, Google Play revenues grew 313 percent, while iOS App Store revenues grew 12.9 percent.

But iOS App Store revenues still were four times larger than Google Play's, according to the App Annie Index released today. The index itself is a monthly report ranking app stores by downloads and revenues, based on estimates of App Annie's tracking data. App Annie declined InfoWorld's request for specific app store revenue numbers, saying that such information is part of its paid service.

"The gap between global revenues on iOS and Google Play is still there," said Bertrand Schmitt, CEO of App Annie. "But the gap is shrinking every month, creating more opportunities for publishers to generate significant revenue growth on Google Play in certain regions." Google Play features digital content for Android and Web systems along with some content for HTML5 and even iOS.

When examining free downloads, App Annie found that Google Play lagged slightly behind iOS, with nine downloads of Google Play apps for every 10 iOS apps downloaded. But Google Play's free-download numbers grew 47 percent in the last five months while iOS grew just 4.5 percent.

JayBird launches BlueBuds X in-ear Bluetooth headphones for $169.95

JayBird launches BlueBuds X in-ear Bluetooth headphones for $169.95

If you thought JayBird's Freedom Sprint headphones were the only pair the company had planned for release this year, think again. Today marks the launch of BlueBuds X, an in-ear Bluetooth set with a microphone for taking calls, and a selection of the company's trademarked features. "Shift" technology promises lossless decompression of audio, while "PureSound" filters out white noise present in the vocal range. The headphones also boast "SignalPlus" to ensure stable pairing, the secure fit wings you see above so they stay nice and snug, and an eight-hour battery life. As usual, JayBird is targeting BlueBuds X at the fitness and sports market, but we reckon they'll probably work just as well outside of the gym. If you fancy picking up a pair, then head to the source link below to order them in "Midnight Black" or "Storm White" for $169.95 a piece.

WSU can print 3D parts from moon rock to help astronauts in a jam video

It was only a matter of time before 3D printers went to other worlds, really. Following a NASA line of questioning, Washington State University has determined that it's possible to print 3D objects from moon rock. Researchers learned that simulated moon material behaves like silica and can be shaped into 3D objects by melting it with a laser, whether it's to form new objects (like the ugly cylinders above) or to patch objects together. Would-be assemblers could also introduce additive materials to vary the composition on demand. No, the results aren't as pretty as certain 3D creations, but they could be vital for future missions to Mars or the Moon: astronauts could fix equipment, or build new parts, without either an elaborate process or waiting for supplies from Earth. Now all we need are the extraterrestrial missions to take advantage of WSU's ideas.

iPhone 5 gets MIIT network license, Chinese passport

The Ministry of Industry and Technology of the People's Republic of China has rubber-stamped Apple's iPhone 5 as being suitable for sale in the country. It's the last of several regulatory hurdles the handset has had to leap through, and is expected to be on sale by Mid-December. The filings reveal that both a WCDMA and CDMA-2000 edition have been approved, confirming reports that it'll be available on both China Unicom and China Telecom. Presumably Tim Cook and chums didn't fancy building a TD-SCDMA version just for China Mobile, but don't worry folks -- Stephen Elop's got your back.

Sony unveils price for PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CinaAlta 4K camcorders

Sony unveils price, footage for PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 CinaAlta 4K camcorders

Looking for a hearty new camera rig to spice up your next indie film? Start saving: Sony finally went live with pricing for its PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 CineAlta PL-mount cameras. Following an LA screening of professionally shot 4K and HD footage, Sony mentioned that the high-end camcorders can be had for $34,900 and $19,400, respectively. The steeper priced PMW-F55 has a sharper edge, of course, and can natively shoot 4K, 2K or HD footage through a global shutter. The (comparatively) less expensive F5 can handle 4K video too, but needs the help of the AXS-R5 RAW recorder (a $6,300 add-on) to pull it off -- it also has a narrower color gamut and a rolling shutter. Roll on past the break for a full list of prices and accessories.
