Microsoft makes right moves with Kinect

"Games are going to be one-hundred percent more awesome from now on," said the 9-year-old game industry analyst who lives at my house as we checked out Kinect, a new Microsoft device that allows you to interact with a game's virtual world by waving your arms and moving your body.

Droid RAZR M 'blue steel edition' now available at Best Buy

Droid Razr M

What's black and white and pink all over? Well, not too long ago, the answer to that was the Droid RAZR M. As of today, however, Motorola's nearly bezel-less Jelly Bean handset will also be pretty in platinum. Available as a special edition for Best Buy, the Verizon-locked device has been given a steely makeover, but that's not to say the M's been scrubbed of all its flair. Turn the phone on its side and you'll note its hardware keys now pop with a blue hue. Apart from the cosmetic overhaul, not much else on the 4.3-inch device has changed. So, if you're still game for a solid Android mid-ranger, you can snag this freshly embellished phone for $50 on a two-year contract at the source below.

How to get a new PC that runs Windows 7, not Windows 8

New Coke, the XFL, the recently canceled ABC drama 666 Park Avenue—all perfectly decent, but they lacked that certain excitement that turns a pimply kid into a Justin Bieber.

Windows 8 is also having a hard time exciting the masses. We love much about its touch-oriented user interface, personalization features, and deep links to cloud services. But many people shopping for a new PC just want the familiarity of Windows 7.

Pay a visit to Best Buy, as we did, and you'll find that if you hope to stick with Windows 7, you may be in for a rude awakening. "We don't carry Windows 7 anymore. It was phased out last year," a blue-shirted salesperson told us at a Dedham, Massachusetts, store.

That may be true at the Best Buy we visited, but when it comes to the availability of Windows 7 PCs, you still have options. You just need to know where to look.

You Have To Wait One More Day for an iPhone 5 Jailbreak

That iOS 6.1 jailbreak that was maybe probably definitely supposed to come out today, courtesy of evad3rs? Bad news; it's not coming until tomorrow. Despite the rumored (and hoped) Super Bowl-day launch date, we'll all have to wait just a little longer. More »

Tagwhat Aims To Become The Go-To App For Local Deals With Social Media Aggregation And A New Design

tagwhat feedTagwhat is a mobile startup trying to present users with content that's relevant to their location — descriptions of nearby points of interest, social network messages related to those locations, and now, with the latest app update, with local deals and events. The deals are pulled from Facebook and other social networks, and then recommended to users based on the time and location. Co-founder and CEO Dave Elchoness argued that this approach is significant because it means a user can see relevant deals without having to follow a bunch of different businesses on Facebook and Twitter. At the same time, the businesses get access to potential new customers (rather than just promoting themselves to existing fans), and they don't have to change their behavior at all — which also means that Tagwhat doesn't have to go out and recruit a bunch of businesses.

Prime 'beachfront spectrum' for all - if Congress will help

You're probably reading this on junk. And I'm not talking about newsprint - industry woes aside, that's high-quality stuff. But if you're on a computer or an iPad, and you're not plugged into an Internet jack in the wall? Junk, then.

Will We Ever Get the Chance to Visit Other Stars?

Traveling beyond our own solar neighborhood has been an aspiration of high-minded explorers ever since we knew such a thing was possible. Well, technically possible. Will we ever actually be able to do it? It all depends on how optimistic you are, but the downside is you'll probably definitely never live to find out whether or not you were right. Vsauce explains. BlackBerry Super Bowl ad shows the few things a Z10 can't do (video)

BlackBerry Super Bowl ad shows the few things a Z10 can't do video

BlackBerry vowed to pull out all the stops to get BlackBerry 10 noticed -- and the company certainly isn't holding back with its promised Super Bowl spot. The ad claims that it's easier to show what the Z10 can't do in 30 seconds than what it can, and goes to extremes that include setting a man on fire and giving him elephant legs. We do still get a glance (or rather, Peek) at the phone itself, thankfully. Does the commercial make us want to drop everything for a Z10? Not necessarily, but we'll likely remember what we saw. Check the clip for yourself after the break.

Scientists Have Made the First Truly 3D Microchip

The fastest microchips we have can only pass their data from side to side and front to back, no matter how close their components are squeezed together. A new chip developed by researchers at University of Cambridge, on the other hand, can pass data up and down too, making for the world's first truly 3D microchip. More »

Don’t Mess With The GOOG

google-manA couple of years ago I wrote in this space: "A spectre is haunting Mountain View. No, not bed bugs: bit rot. Google is in serious decline." Well, credit where it's due. These days Google has put its problems behind it and is soaring from strength to strength. Contenders keep coming and trying to claim its crown--and failing. I give you Apple Maps and Facebook's Graph Search as an example.

The 8 best laptops and Ultrabooks available today

Have you picked up your laptop lately? If it's getting long in the tooth, it's probably as heavy as it is slow. Fortunately there's no better time to look for a more portable and modern machine than during the holidays. Even if you can't find a year-end deal on the particular model that interests you, you'll be able to impress family and friends when you whip out your new laptop at holiday gatherings.

Thanks to the performance and efficiency of Intel's Core-branded processor platform, Ultrabooks are gradually gaining in popularity. These machines provide great performance and long battery life, despite weighing less than 4 pounds. They're also a traveler's best friend—slim and light, with quick boot times owing to built-in solid-state memory drives.

That said, if you need more raw power and are willing to compromise on portability, you can find plenty of great traditional laptops. These machines may weigh more, but they also carry larger screens, which are helpful in countless multitasking scenarios.

To help you with your purchasing decision, we've compiled a list of the best Ultrabooks and laptops available right now. PCWorld staffers test as many models as possible—and then we pass our experiences on to you.
