Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Purported Nokia Lumia 820, 920 Pureview pics arrive on Twitter

Our old friend, the @evleaks Twitter account is back, claiming that it's gotten the first official shots of Nokia's Lumia 820 and 920 with Pureview. The terse tweets claim that the 820 is a 4.3-inch handset, while the 4.5-inch 920 will arrive with Nokia's magical new imaging technology. We're understandably skeptical, given the small size of the lens on the 920 (pictured, left) compared to the 808, but we can't fault the feed's track record for leaks so far.

Tokyo Court: Samsung Didn't Violate Apple Patent in Japan

A Tokyo court ruled Friday that Samsung did not infringe an Apple patent in a locally filed lawsuit, a minor victory for Samsung in the ongoing legal battles between the two companies.

The ruling by Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji concerned a single patent related to synching smartphones and tablets with media devices. Apple is still pursuing other lawsuits in the country, where legal monetary awards are typically much lower than in the U.S.

"We welcome the court's decision, which confirmed our long-held position that our products do not infringe Apple's intellectual property. We will continue to offer highly innovative products to consumers, and continue our contributions towards the mobile industry's development," Samsung said in a statement.

A spokesman for Apple Japan said the company had no comment.

In a separate case in the U.S., a federal jury last week ruled heavily in Apple's favor on a number of patents, saying the South Korean electronics giant must pay Apple $1.05 billion for various patent infringements relating to the look and software of Apple's devices. The amount could still grow for deliberate infringement.

Following the verdict, Apple asked the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose division on Monday to block sales of eight Samsung products, including seven smartphones from its main Galaxy brand.

A similar lawsuit in Korea ended in a draw, when a Seoul Central District Court said both companies have infringed each other's patents, imposing small financial damages and a halt in sales of older products from both companies.

Apple's smartphones and tablets are dominant in the Japanese market, far outselling rival devices from Samsung.

Firefox 16 beta arrives with web app hooks, Reader Mode for Android and VoiceOver for Macs

Firefox 15 is barely fresh off the vine, and we're already looking at a beta version 16 for both desktop platforms and Android. Mozilla's test release builds in the first support for web apps that play nicely with the Mozilla Marketplace; as long as titles have a slight amount of extra formatting, they can slot into Firefox without hiccups. More treats exist if you're running certain platforms: the Android crowd receives a Safari-style Reader Mode that strips out the fluff from pages, while Mac users see the once test-only VoiceOver support flipped on by default to improve accessibility. Even developers get a little something special through a quick-access toolbar and more readily accessible CSS4 scripting.
